10th October 2019
Windsurfing: Alton Ressy
Wind Direction: SW
Wind Stength: F2 - F4
Surf / Sea State: flat
Air Temperature: warm
Sea Temperature: warm
Weather: Sunny
Max Speed: 18.74 (knots - unless stated otherwise)
Distance Covered: 14.2 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)

Nice session again at Alton for 3 hrs, albeit gusty SW wind ranging from F2-F4. 4 sailors out on fin. In the lulls a big sail was needed, but in the gusts 8.5 was too big. Choose 8.5, as lighter guys went 7m.
Rigged the Slingshot foil / Exocet RF-91 foil bd, to Goya Mark 8.5 sail.
Had planned to experiment with fuselage settings, trying other options, but the wind was fickle so just kept the same. First flight was a disaster as the first gusts hit me. Straight out of the front door.
Had to move the mast track all the way forward to keep the nose down. When a foil board speed increases, its amazing how quick the foil breeches the water and the nose flips over. Had a few decent flight by throttling back in stall mode and lying low. Like that!
However as soon as I veered off downwind things went too quick to control, so had to unhook, and go with the gusts. I still cant hook in, sheet in hard and keel the foil over to windward, like some windsur foil heads or the kite guys. Alton can be frustrating because I was overpowered on the 8.5, so switch to another board and fin. As soon as I did that the wind died. Spent 20 mins floundering around so went back on foil. Now I know why foils are good, because for that same 10kts I couldn't get the fin to work, the foil started flying again and I did some nice runs to windward, really close reaching upwind, without stalling. Crunch the new board with my harness hook, as I climb on the board! Gutted, as I had been paying close attention to this possibility. Burnt almost 3k calories for the 3 hrs session, so good workout and learnt a few more tricks to sustain flight.
Moving the boom up helped me a lot, and have adjusted the lines out to 26/28cm as shorter just didn't suit me. I still cant sustain flight when the back foot is in the straps. I end up breeching the foil, unable to get the wait forwards as the bd speed increases. Next time.
